Baseball at 6 years old used to mean a couple of father's with a duffel bag filled with 4 helmets, a half dozen rubber baseballs and a tee. In today's game it means weekend tournaments, kids pitching and lots of really expensive gear.
But there is one thing that always stands out to me with young kids; their glove. They either have a cheap-o glove made of some plastic type "leather" or a glove that's probably 1" or 2" too big for them. Having a son, who's now 13, and a 4 year old nephew, I have been in this dilemma myself. I have been able to find a few gloves to be able to get your kids a quality glove at a young age
1. Training Gloves
Training Gloves make perfect gloves for younger kids. For his 5th birthday, I bought my son a 9" training glove from Valle baseball. He used it as his gamer until he was 8 and now uses it for its intended purpose when he practices. I recently cleaned, conditioned and relaced it so that it would be in shape to get the reps on the practice field. The one big con, they don't typically make trainers for left handed throwers
2. Shoeless Joe Junior Series
When I went to get my nephew's 1st glove is when I realized that you can't find trainers for LHT. So I began scouring the internet to find a glove for him. My search led me to the Shoeless Joe website. I had heard of them before but never had I realized that they had a Junior Series (or a Shoeless Jane series for softball for that matter). I ordered the glove from justballgloves.com and I was pleasantly surprised. The leather was top quality and it was already very soft so break-in wasn't an issue.
If you have found any other options for the young ones, please email me as I would like to update this post
